Site History

Laigh Isle is a development of 46 chalet style properties on a site covering 7 acres.

“Laigh” means low lying land and as we are at sea level and have shore access via a slipway the name was well chosen.

The site was originally purchased from a local farmer in 1972 by Salvesen Properties Ltd. Whelmar Leisure Ltd marketed the properties. Although the properties were intended primarily for holiday and recreational purposes, the planning consent did not restrict the length of time they can be occupied. This information is stated in the sales brochure. First owners moved in in the mid 70’s.

The original sales brochure also outlined the difficulties of maintaining the grounds if the majority of owners used the properties for holidays. To forestall a decline in standards responsibility was passed to a Residents’ Trust Company - Isle of Whithorn Leisure Ltd.

Over the years more permanent residents have established Laigh Isle as their home and in 2022 the number stands at 12.
